The Department of Transnational Studies

Overview of Graduate Program

Global Gender Studies has had an academic presence at UB for nearly three decades. Currently, the graduate program in Global Gender Studies offers master's and doctoral degrees. A master’s degree in Global Gender Studies prepares students with the theoretical and practical foundations for advanced graduate work and careers in diverse fields, including teaching, government and community and non-governmental organizations. The MA degree in Global Gender is based on graduate coursework and original scholarship in the form of a Master’s paper or creative project written under the supervision of at least two faculty members.

Global Gender Studies at the University at Buffalo is one of twelve doctoral degree granting Women/Gender Studies departments in the United States. The faculty has fashioned a competitive graduate program in Global Gender Studies with two concentrations:

  • Feminist Studies with academic content in literary studies, feminist theory, and cultural identity formation and transfer.
  • Global Gender Studies with academic content in the construction of gender, gender relationship, and social and institutional structures of gender in society.

Throughout their program of study, students can take advantage of the expertise of our affiliated faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Schools of Education and Architecture, and the Law School.  The doctoral degree is based on graduate coursework, examinations, and original scholarship is the form of a dissertation written under the supervision of the student’s advisor and dissertation committee.
